The "Celebration of Abilities" Award is a groundbreaking initiative designed to recognize and honor exceptional students within the Clark County School District (CCSD) who have faced significant personal challenges but continue to excel in academics and athletics. This award is the result of a partnership between CCSD and Creation 4 Cause and seeks to shine a spotlight on the achievements of students with disabilities who demonstrate resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to reaching their goals. Each quarter, a different student is nominated and surprised with this prestigious award, celebrated by their peers, teachers, coaches, and family members. The award is not only a tribute to their hard work and perseverance but also a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of community support in helping individuals overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams.
Sophia Zagorski, the winner of the Fall 2024 Celebration of Abilities Award, has overcome the challenges of living with Hypochondroplasia to become a powerful leader and athlete. Despite her condition, she has set world records in Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin in the Paralympic track and field division. Sophia also served as the manager of her high school flag football team and competed on the varsity track team. Her dedication and hard work have earned her a spot at the 2024 Paralympic trials, with aspirations to represent the U.S. at the 2028 Paralympic Games.
In addition to her athletic success, Sophia is a passionate advocate for people with disabilities, working to increase access to adaptive sports and mentoring younger athletes. Her resilience, leadership, and commitment to her community make her a deserving recipient of this award.
9-year-old Stefania Gutierrez is a shining example of resilience and determination, overcoming challenges to excel in athletics. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy and managing seizures, Stefania has set personal records in Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin, earning the title of Most Improved Athlete for 2024. Her dedication continues to drive her success, and she shows no signs of slowing down.
